Exploring Kampala at a weekend

Those that have the ability to change something that is inherently wrong, have the responsibility to do so

Firefly Uganda is a small organization run entirely by volunteers, which is why volunteers are an integral part to the completion of our projects. As a volunteer at Firefly Uganda you will get a chance to get involved with every aspect of every project on the go at the time of your stay. We are always looking for people to join our team, so read below to find out how you can get involved!

As a volunteer at Firefly Uganda you will have the opportunity to get involved with every aspect of every project that is up and running during your stay. Our current projects revolve around four main areas:

Check our                         page to learn more about the work we do!

Included in our volunteering program is:

An orientation week, where you will learn about the history of Uganda and the Ssese islands in particular, its people, their culture and traditions, as well as being introduced to all the projects and the relevant skills you will need to complete the projects

Cultural orientation activities such as a weekend tour through the capital city of Kampala and more getaways for long-term volunteers

Leisure activities such as swimming, mountain biking, football (soccer), and more! And if you enjoy a game of cards or backgammon, then challenge accepted!

Accomodation and all meals, as well as water, tea and coffee

We are a team of people with many years of experience working in Africa as volunteers with charities and NGOs. This means we are able to give you excellent guidance and understanding during your stay with us, whilst always respecting and supporting the local community and its needs. Our goal is to create a fun and relaxed working environment where volunteers get deeply involved in the projects, and what the completion of these projects sets out to achieve.

Our accommodation currently consists of a camp with safari tents, bathroom, kitchen and dining area, as well as running purified water, hot shower and solar energy to supply the whole site with electricity and WiFi.

It is located at a 25 minutes walk from the closest village, right next to the lake, which means swimming is easy.

We are always working towards improving our camp, whilst promoting sustainability and reducing our environmental impact.

Ideally, we are always looking for people who already have a certain level of skills and knowledge relevant to our cause, as well as people who can commit to a minimum of 3 months. However, it is most important to us that our volunteers are motivated to learn and get involved. We welcome volunteers of all circumstances, whether you are a student or a professional, on your own, with a group of friends, a family or as a couple, we want to hear from you!

We also have room for a limited number of volunteers who would like to visit for short periods of time. This allows you to learn about our work, and decide whether you would like to join for longer.

Here at Firefly Uganda we value the work of our volunteers immensively, which is why we want to give back as much as we can. We are always open to advice and suggestions, and adapting to changing situations. However, as you will learn, things sometimes happen differently here in Africa, and our planning is based around our experience, whilst trying to incorporate a flexible understanding.

Upon leaving our camp, your skills and knowledge will be much improved in areas such as:

Teaching methods, interacting with children and the community they come from

design, plumbing, electrical, and all types of building methods revolving around sustainability and utilization of local materials

environmentally-friendly alternatives
